I’d は I had を省略したもので、この文章は過去完了形です。今は試験を実際に経験したのでそうではないことがわかったが、それまで、つまり過去は「ずっと」恐ろしいものだと思っていたので単なる過去形ではなく過去完了形になっています。

end-of-year はこれで形容詞です。end-of-year (年度末の) exam は「期末試験」です。

a three-year-old boy (3才児) の three-year-old なども形容詞です。good-looking guy とか long-lasting engine oil など、ハイフンでつないで形容詞として使うことがよくあります。ちなみに、「あの子は３才だ。」は He is three years old. で、このときは year は複数形の years になります。

that は試験のことで、「恐ろしいものと言うよりも楽しいものだということがわかった。」です。

多分、「他の人のことは知らないけれど私には」という気持ちがあるので、I もやや強く発音をしています。
